I grew up in a household full of stories. All you would have to do is sit silently for a minute, and either my Mother or Nanna had a story to tell about their childhood, or my childhood, or just the world around us that most people passed by without a second thought. Is it any wonder that I would grow up to be the same?
All my life I've loved to draw! Growing up in a tiny town in Southern Oregon, there wasn't much to do, but get into trouble and to draw. I kept up with a healthy balance of each! In school I would get into trouble from teachers complaining that I drew in class---despite my protests that I could doodle and listen to them at the same time!
Even though imagination was heartedly encouraged, it wasn't at all acceptable to have it be a decisive part of my future---much less try to make a living at it! All the while, the grown-ups around me pushed me to focus on the future in terms of holding down a grown-up job. This, fortunately never stuck! I spent hours in my room dreaming and crafting a collection of characters to add to an imaginary world. I knew that some day I could make my own dreams come true, and with any luck, inspire others to do the same.
I followed that dream by moving to New York city where many freelance illustration experiences fostered my confidence in my work. New York is, after all, the city of dreams! After nine years, I returned home to the Northwest Coast. Here, in Seattle, where the trees grow tall and the coffee is plentiful, I share a home with my Tybalt, a prince among cats
